Specimen

Since the invention of movable type, the Specimen Book has been an integral part of the printing industry. Type foundries around the world have produced these books, usually as a catalog or brochure, to advertise both the quality and range of typefaces available.

Almost all specimen books have similar qualities. They show a range of sample text sizes using letterform strings from A-Z, numerals, special characters such as punctuation symbols, and sometimes even small sentences or phrases to show legibility and optical flow.

Today, specimen books are still produced by several foundries but most have since migrated to the web where they can be easily updated and displayed in more imaginative ways.

To pay homage to the Specimen Book we created the Fonteez Specimen shirt. Each design includes the alphabet from A-Z in both capitals and lower-case, numerals from 0-9 and string of alphanumeric symbols set in five of the most famous typefaces from Bodoni to Helvetica.
